By 6 p.m. on a Sunday in August, the grass slope above the Hartwood Acres amphitheater is already claimed. Blankets overlap at the corners. A line moves at the Hop Farm Brewing tent. Somewhere below, a soundcheck is bouncing off the tree line at Middle Road. If you live in Gibsonia or the surrounding Richland Township streets, you have probably driven past this a dozen times without stopping. That is the miscalculation this post is trying to fix.
Here is the claim: the ten weeks between now and Halloween contain the densest stretch of free, walkable, no-ticket programming this corner of the North Hills gets all year, and almost all of it is anchored to two addresses you can reach in under fifteen minutes. Once you see the sequence, the weekends plan themselves.
The Sundays You Already Half-Know About
The Allegheny County Summer Concert Series is the piece most residents can name but few actually track week to week. The county's free weekly outdoor concerts run at South Park and Hartwood Acres, and the Hartwood side is the one that sits in Gibsonia's backyard. As of early August 2026, three Sunday-night shows remain on the Hartwood schedule:

Two things about this schedule are worth interpreting rather than restating. First, the concerts themselves are free, but the on-site vendor lineup is fixed and local. Local food trucks, Black Dog Winery and Hop Farm Brewing Company will be on-site at all concerts starting at 6:00 pm, which means the "arrive at 6, music at 7:30" rhythm has a real payoff if you show up hungry. Second, these are the last three Sundays of the year the amphitheater will run this way. Performances will take place rain or shine at open-air amphitheaters with no covered seating, so bring the chair regardless of the forecast.
The Lemon Twigs date is the one to circle. It is closing out the Hartwood Acres highlights on Aug. 16, which in practical terms means it will draw the heaviest crowd of the three. If you have out-of-town family visiting in August and only one Sunday to make the case for the neighborhood, this is the show.
The Saturday in August That Belongs to Richland
Slot one Saturday between the Hartwood Sundays and the calendar shifts entirely to Richland Township's own biggest day. The 32nd Annual Richland Township Community Day lands on Saturday, August 8. The 32nd Annual Community Day runs from 4 p.m. until fireworks, at Richland Community Park.
A few specifics that separate this from a generic township picnic:
- Address: 1157 Van Velsor Drive, Bakerstown, PA 15007. That is a Bakerstown mailing address, but functionally it is the Richland Township park most Gibsonia households already use.
- The fireworks: The event will begin at 4pm and will end with Zambelli Fireworks. Zambelli is the Pittsburgh-based show that also handles the big riverfront displays downtown, which is the small detail residents underrate. This is not a municipal sparkler run.
- Scale: Attendance: 2,500, with a tribute-band stage and roughly eight food booths. It fills the park but does not overwhelm it.
The reason to note the scale is planning. A 2,500-person turnout at a suburban community park means Van Velsor Drive will back up between 3:30 and 4:30, and again after fireworks. If you live north of Route 910, come in from the top. If you live south of the turnpike, walk in from the neighborhood streets if you can. The park's own lots close first.
What Happens When The Concerts Stop
Most residents assume Hartwood goes quiet after Labor Day. It does not. The amphitheater programming ends, but the county pivots the same 629-acre park into a fall calendar that runs straight through late October. This is the part almost no one outside the immediate neighborhood tracks.
The pivot happens in three stages:
Late September — Hay Day. Sept. 21 and 28: Hay Day Festivals, Hartwood Acres and South Park. Kids can join the fun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Hartwood Acres and Sept. 28 at South Park. Zip down giant inflatable slides, jump in a bounce house and take a hayride. Expect puppet shows, a petting zoo and balloon artists, along with games, giveaways and hands-on activities. Free with no registration required. The Hartwood date, Sept 21, is the one for Gibsonia families. It runs the same day and time each year and is one of the few full-day, no-cost, no-ticket kid events in the North Hills.
Mid-October — Punkin Chunkin. Oct. 19: Punkin Chunkin, Hartwood Acres. This annual event launches pumpkins across the field with a full-size trebuchet. Family activities include crafts and games, face painting, balloon art and Medieval sword fighting. Admission is free. If you have never watched a working trebuchet fling a pumpkin across a field in Allison Park, put this on the calendar once. It is genuinely strange in a way you cannot replicate at a corn maze.
Late October — Trunk-or-Treat. Oct. 26-27: Trunk-or-Treat, Allegheny County Park. Dress in costume and trick-or-treat from car cruisers, who will pass out candy and treats to kids. Trunk-or-Treat runs from 2-4 p.m. on Oct. 26 in South Park and Oct. 27 at Hartwood Acres. Admission is free. The Hartwood date is Monday, Oct 27, which is the tell that this is designed as a supplement to Halloween proper, not a replacement.
A practical note on the fall dates: all three are daytime events, which changes the parking math entirely. The amphitheater lots that fill by 6 p.m. in August have plenty of room at noon in September. If summer concerts have burned you before, the fall stretch is a different experience.
Why Any Of This Matters When You Live Here
The Hartwood estate itself is the reason the calendar works. Hartwood Acres is a 629-acre Allegheny County Park, with one of the largest country estates in the region. Hartwood includes a Tudor Mansion cottage, stable and gate lodge, and inside the mansion is a collection of original English and American antiques. Guests can enjoy the beautiful gardens as well as opportunities for hiking, horseback riding and, in the winter, cross-country skiing. That footprint is what lets the county run a symphony concert, a pumpkin catapult, and a costume parade out of the same address without any of them feeling crammed.
The other quiet fact is the ownership structure. The concerts, Hay Day, Punkin Chunkin, and Trunk-or-Treat are all Allegheny County productions, which is why they are free and why the schedule shows up on the county's own special events calendar rather than through a promoter. Community Day is Richland Township's, budgeted through the township's recreation department. Two different governments, one shared calendar that residents can plan a full quarter around.
